Casualty Estimates in Russia-Ukraine War Could Reach 2 Million by 2026

A recent report suggests that the casualty count in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has persisted for nearly four years, could climb to 2 million by spring 2026. This number encompasses those killed, wounded, and missing in action from both sides.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) released the unsettling projections, detailing that Russian forces have incurred about 1.2 million casualties from February 2022 to December 2025. This figure includes around 325,000 military deaths. On the other side, Ukraine’s estimates range between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties, with approximately 140,000 soldiers reported killed. CSIS also posits that the total current casualties for both Russia and Ukraine could be around 1.8 million.

However, it’s noted that neither Moscow nor Kiev tends to provide accurate or timely data on military casualties, making it difficult to ascertain a clear understanding of the human cost on either side. The Associated Press pointed out that both nations seem focused on inflating casualties for their opponents. For instance, Russia has officially acknowledged just over 6,000 military deaths, while activists and independent journalists claim that coverage of military losses has been heavily suppressed in Russian media.

Zelenskiy Discusses Trilateral Talks

The report goes on to highlight that, despite Ukraine’s claims of battlefield success, Russia is enduring significant losses for minimal territorial gains. According to CSIS, “no major power has suffered more casualties and deaths in any war since World War II.” Furthermore, the report indicates that casualties on the Russian side are notably higher compared to Ukraine, estimating a ratio of approximately 2.5:1 or even 2:1. Factors such as poor tactics, corruption, low morale, and Ukraine’s effective defense strategies are attributed to these substantial losses.

CSIS articulates that Russia’s strategy appears to embrace high casualty rates in hopes of eventually exhausting Ukraine’s military and societal resolve. As the report points out, Russian forces have advanced, on average, a mere 15 to 70 meters daily during their most significant operations since the military leadership transitioned in January 2024—a pace slower than nearly any major offensive in recent history.

As the report was unveiled close to the fourth anniversary of the invasion, casualties continue to escalate on both sides, despite various international mediation efforts. On Wednesday, Ukrainian officials reported that two individuals died in a Russian airstrike targeting an apartment complex near Kyiv, while additional attacks in Ukrainian cities Odesa and Kryvy Rikh resulted in at least nine injuries.

Recent Trilateral Meeting in UAE

In a separate development, representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States recently convened in the United Arab Emirates, marking the first trilateral dialogue since 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the discussions as “constructive” in a post on X, mentioning that various topics were covered and that further meetings could take place in the immediate future. He emphasized that all parties agreed to keep their capitals informed of negotiations and collaborate on subsequent actions.
