Catherine Zeta-Jones Reflects on Life in New York
Catherine Zeta-Jones has made a conscious decision to prioritize New York over Hollywood, and it seems she has no regrets about that choice. The Academy Award-winning actress recently opened up about her life, revealing that her time spent on the East Coast with her husband, Michael Douglas, could have influenced her career in ways she’s still contemplating.
“It’ll be interesting to see if it has had a negative effect on my career,” Zeta-Jones shared, noting that she has never quite engaged with the industry people in Los Angeles. “I’ve never had a chat with you in Los Angeles,” she added, hinting at the contrast in experiences.
Building a Life Outside Hollywood
While many actors chase opportunities in Los Angeles, Zeta-Jones, now 56, has spent years cultivating her life in New York City. This choice has not only shaped her family life but also influenced the friendships she’s made. She mentioned that, in her current circles, Hollywood figures don’t frequent her dinner table.
“I’m spending more time with New York business people, Wall Street people, art people,” she explained. The guest list at her home looks quite different than it did in L.A.
Long-Term Partnership
It’s clear that Zeta-Jones and Douglas, both seasoned in the entertainment world, have navigated their relationship through various life stages. They’ve been together for over 25 years, meeting in 1998 and marrying in 2000. They’ve raised two children, Dylan, now 25, and Carys, 22, while largely staying away from the typical Hollywood lifestyle.
“We never got along in Los Angeles,” Zeta-Jones remarked, highlighting that their life together has been more harmonious on the East Coast.
With children now grown, the couple faces a new chapter, as they’ve recently listed their expansive 11,653-square-foot riverfront home in Irvington, New York. Zeta-Jones claimed that the decision to sell was natural since their kids had “left the nest.” Yet, their connection to New York’s art scene remains strong.
A Different Kind of Inspiration
Zeta-Jones mentioned enjoying visits to elegant homes in the Hamptons to admire art, describing herself as an “eclectic collector.” In her latest film, *The Gallerist*, she plays Marianne, a refined art consultant. The film made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival last month.
Even as she steps back from the frenetic pace of Hollywood, Zeta-Jones continues to work. She is set to return to her beloved role as Morticia Addams in Netflix’s *Wednesday* and is also involved in Prime Video’s thriller *Kill Jackie*.
