Catholic churches FILLED for Easter as conversions soar

Over the weekend, Catholic churches across the United States and other Western regions experienced a significant influx of new members. This surge, particularly among young converts, might be seen as a rebound rather than a trend, according to some analysts.

At the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, Archbishop José Gomez welcomed 20 individuals who had fully embraced the faith during a crowded Easter Vigil. He remarked that their stories were intertwined with the broader narrative of God’s love for humanity.

In total, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles welcomed 8,598 catechumens and candidates this Easter, as reported by angelus news.

On Saturday, Archbishop Ronald Hicks greeted over 3,600 new catechumens in the Archdiocese of New York. He mentioned the joy found in belonging to Jesus and the church, addressing a packed crowd at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Father Andy Matijevic from Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago shared with WBBM-TV that they’ve held several Masses, all well attended. He noted that on Easter Sunday alone, 18 people were baptized, which added to more than 600 catechumens who received sacramental initiation during the Easter Vigil.

Additionally, the Archdiocese of Chicago recorded a striking 78% rise in membership, with 445 individuals from various Christian traditions joining the faith during the weekend.

At St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Parish in Hinsdale, Father Burke Masters noted a 124% increase in new members this year, with the average age being 28.

St. Mary’s Church near Texas A&M welcomed 61 new members, mostly young adults, with many being students motivated by friends.

Archbishop Richard Henning from Boston observed similar trends, predicting over 680 catechumens would join the church on Easter Sunday. He sensed an openness in the current generation toward spiritual matters that’s been rare for some time.

Other dioceses in the U.S. and in countries like Canada reported similar spikes in membership. In Toronto, for instance, 2,050 adult seekers were baptized at the Easter Vigil, marking a 12.4% increase from the previous year.

In France, Catholic churches hosted over 13,000 adult baptisms, including 700 in Paris alone, according to National Catholic Register. This wave of conversions comes after several years of low conversion rates.

Data from U.S. dioceses shows a notable drop in conversions between 2000 and 2020, with adult baptisms falling from 173,674 to about 70,796. Despite the recent upsurge, the number of infants baptized has decreased by more than half since 2000.
