Notre Dame Reverses Staff Values Changes Amid Backlash

The University of Notre Dame has decided to revert its recent changes to staff values after facing significant criticism for appearing to dilute its Catholic mission.

Initially, on November 10, the university replaced staff values that emphasized the importance of embracing its Catholic mission with more generalized concepts like “treating all people with dignity and respect” and “working together.” However, Notre Dame has now reiterated its “commitment to the Catholic mission” by reintroducing new faith-centered values. They acknowledged receiving “constructive feedback” that suggested the prior decision caused confusion.

After an article from the Daily Caller News Foundation highlighted concerns over Notre Dame seemingly moving away from its Catholic identity, criticism arose online. Some questioned, “What’s the problem?” while others remarked that the university’s appeal comes from its unapologetic Catholic stance.

In their latest statement, Notre Dame’s public relations team dismissed claims that they were undermining the school’s Catholic identity. They clarified that while they had included their commitment to Catholicism in the preamble of the values, it was misinterpreted by some as a sign of reduced dedication. To address this misunderstanding, they have now placed the Catholic mission language at the forefront of their five core values.

Along with existing values such as community, collaboration, excellence, and innovation, the university has now incorporated the commitment to a “Catholic mission.” This aims to promote the mission of being the leading Catholic research university.

Notre Dame stated, “Our Catholic mission guides and informs everything we do.” They invited everyone to reflect on how they can further contribute to this mission, which has been a central principle since the university’s founding.

The previous values required staff to maintain “high moral standards” and prioritize “the common good.” The revised values now encourage embracing opportunities with “creativity and dedication” as well as a commitment to truth and service.
