A young widow is raising her “miracle” baby, born nine months after her husband died in a freak accident on their honeymoon in the Caribbean.
Mari Kuhlmann, 23, announced that she had given birth to a son, Raphael Patrick Kuhlmann, just nine months after her husband, Nate Kuhlmann, 23, drowned after falling while waterskiing on their honeymoon in St. Lucia, and posted a photo of the newborn on her Instagram.
“Clearly, God had a bigger plan than anything we could imagine,” Kuhlman wrote in a July Instagram post.
“Jesus answered our prayers, and the prayers of people all over the world, in a way we never expected, but it is still a gift of life and we are so happy to be able to share this miracle with you.”
The Ohio couple had been married just three days before the tragic accident and had agreed not to consummate their relationship until they were married. Tampa Bay Times Reported.
“Nate, our son is here!” Kuhlman wrote in a July 18 post.
“You will be praying for him, and for us, every day, and he will know without a doubt how much his Father loves him!”
Kuhlman found out she was pregnant on Thanksgiving Day, just weeks after her husband passed away on Oct. 31, 2023.
“This has to be a miracle,” she told her parents-in-law, according to the Times.
“God himself would have to kick the egg away.”
The couple met in October 2021 as students at Franciscan University in Steubenville and met each other in prayer every night.
Eventually, more than a year later, the couple got engaged and married on October 28, 2023. The date was specifically chosen to avoid Kuhlman getting pregnant on their wedding night, The New York Times reported.
The newlyweds spent their first night together at the apartment, then drove to Miami the next night. The next morning they arrived in the Caribbean to depart for their honeymoon, where tragedy struck.
The couple began their honeymoon on the beach, with Nate going water skiing while Kuhlman looked on from the beach, and minutes later, Kuhlman witnessed her husband receiving CPR on the boat as it raced back to shore.
Attempts were made to resuscitate the young husband, but doctors told his wife that he was unlikely to survive, The Times reported.
Kuhlman first announced her pregnancy on social media on her late husband's birthday in January.
