WNBA Commissioner Responds to Player Criticism

Kathy Engelbert acknowledges the need for improvement in her role as WNBA Commissioner, especially as players voice their frustrations with league leadership.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, Engelbert said, “I realize some players may feel like the league is indifferent to them.” She added, “If our players don’t feel valued, then we definitely need to change that. I need to do better.”

She emphasized recognizing and appreciating the talent of players, both on and off the court, and how that impacts the league, its fans, and the community. It’s crucial for the league to ensure that players feel acknowledged and supported.

Engelbert’s remarks follow a series of criticisms from WNBA athletes towards the league’s management, calling for more collaboration and understanding.

Nafessa Collier, a player for the Minnesota Links, has been particularly vocal, describing Engelbert’s leadership as among the “worst” in sports. She expressed concern over the WNBA’s handling of player issues and its current collective bargaining agreement. “For too long, I’ve kept these conversations private,” Collier stated. “It’s clear there’s no willingness to acknowledge the problems at hand.”

She highlighted that the league often seems more concerned about enforcing fines than finding solutions for the sport’s future.

Collier further claimed that Engelbert had shared sentiments with her in private conversations.

In response to these criticisms, Engelbert said previously that she was disappointed by how Collier framed their discussions and maintained that differing perspectives should not disrupt their commitment to work collaboratively with players.
