Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol has deployed boats on the Chicago River as part of “Operation Midway Blitz,” an initiative focused on immigration and customs enforcement in the area. This operation kicked off last month and has led to over 500 arrests, which include individuals with serious past convictions and criminal charges. Interestingly, local Democratic leaders have voiced their opposition to this initiative.

CBP Commander Gregory Bovino emphasized that “lakes and rivers are also borders,” noting that Chicago’s proximity to Canada and the Great Lakes necessitates vigilance. In a statement on social media, USBP Chief Michael Banks mentioned that the agency’s capability to patrol waterways broadens their enforcement scope.

Jonathan Miller, from CBP Air and Marine Operations, shared a video on social media, asserting that this operation in Chicago is as vital as similar efforts elsewhere in the country.

Opposition continues from Democrats, including Rep. Chuy Garcia from Illinois, who claims the current administration has created a climate of fear within the immigrant community. This comes amid reports of significant deportations over the past eight months.

Former President Trump has suggested deploying National Guard troops in Chicago to combat crime, a move that Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker criticized as imposing “authoritarian rules” on major cities. Meanwhile, Trump has indicated that Memphis, Tennessee, may be next on the list for National Guard deployment.

Interestingly, Washington, D.C. is currently the first city to implement the National Guard strategy, receiving mixed reactions but noted for its crime reduction, even from local Democratic leaders.

In a recent statement, Trump remarked, “We’re going to wipe out cities. We’re going to clean them so they don’t kill five people every weekend.” His words reflect a controversial stance on public safety that continues to stir debate.
