CBS host shocked by poll showing 62% of registered voters support deporting all illegal immigrants

CBS News host Margaret Brennan seemed perplexed on Sunday by recent poll results showing a majority of people in favor of deporting all illegal immigrants.

“According to the Department of Homeland Security, President Biden has deported or deported more people in the past year than any other time since 2010. And depending on the specifics of what was said on the campaign trail, some of what Trump said could be illegal,” Brennan said.

She continued: “In some ways it seems impractical to round up kids. And the courts have questioned whether local authorities have the capacity to do it, and federal authorities don’t have the resources to do it. So what exactly do people think they’re supporting?”

CBS News/YouGov Poll 62% of registered voters said they support a government program to deport all immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally. The poll, conducted June 5-7, also found that a majority of registered voters support President Biden’s latest executive order at the southern border.

Anthony Salvant, CBS director of elections and research, said support for the deportation effort is primarily among supporters of former President Trump, but that some Democrats also support it.

“If you gauge public sentiment on this policy, or really any policy, you get a sense of direction, you get a rough outline,” Salvant said.

Salvant said the poll also asked respondents whether they thought local authorities should be involved in deporting immigrants.

“Certainly a lot of people are in favor of it. Again, the details, the specifics, are not going to be taken up in the collective public opinion,” he said.

“We live in a different time where a lot of people are saying the whole system is not working, and if you connect the dots between all of this, it’s part of a backlash against the system, which explains some of the general sentiment against some of these policies,” Salvant continued.

Brennan said Americans generally just want the government to “do something.”

President Trump has said he plans to use the National Guard to deport immigrants who are in the US illegally, and that he will launch “the largest domestic deportation operation in the history of the United States.”

President Biden recently issued an executive order at the southern border temporarily barring migrants who cross the border illegally from applying for asylum.

Biden issued a presidential proclamation to temporarily suspend the entry of foreign nationals crossing the southern border if the number of encounters at the border exceeds a seven-day average of 2,500 daily encounters, officials said. This will be in effect until 14 days after the seven-day average of border encounters falls below 1,500. Officials said this will make it easier for immigration officials to quickly remove individuals who do not have a legal basis to be in the United States.
