Outgoing CBS Sports coach Sean McManus addressed the growing criticism of Tony Romo.
With Romo and Jim Nantz set to be called up for the 2024 Super Bowl on Sunday, McManus appeared on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Radio with Chris Russo on Thursday and said that given the circumstances, this Romo was asked if this was a particularly big event for him.
McManus admitted that network higher-ups are asking the former Cowboys quarterback to relax a little, after saying it’s a big moment for the Super Bowl, of course.

“He’s not a meat-and-potatoes analyst,” McManus said. What’s covered in Awful Annunciation.
“He’s more of a fan. He gets excited. Sometimes we say to him, ‘Hey, you’re getting too excited about the game, calm down a little.’ I think that’s a plus. But generally speaking, I think people really enjoy listening to Nantz, Romo, and Tracy. [Wolfson]…
“When social media starts to turn around, it really turns around and it almost becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, and people who really like Tony tend to stop tweeting. It’s mostly negative things… and Right now, they’re all focused on Tony Romo.”
Starting last season, there were whispers in sports media circles that Romo wasn’t doing his homework as rigorously as other top analysts.
The rumor got even more popular when Colin Cowherd said Romo’s obsession with golf was interfering with soccer broadcasts.
Mr. McManus disagreed with the assessment that Mr. Romo was operating out of inertia.
“I think he’s working his butt off,” McManus said. “I think the fact that he hasn’t prepared is unfair.”
McManus will be replaced by David Berson at the end of the football season.
