Trump’s Attendance at the US Open Final Sparks Mixed Reactions

Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz, currently ranked second in the world, referred to it as a “privilege” to play in front of a sitting US president at the US Open final this Sunday. Donald Trump’s decision to attend stands out, especially given the guest lineup typically seen at this annual New York event.

This year’s tournament has showcased several celebrities known for their progressive views. For instance, seven-time Olympic gold medalist and gymnastics champion Simone Biles was spotted during Coco Gauff’s second-round match, making headlines weeks after she faced backlash on social media for her remarks regarding trans athletes in women’s sports.

Biles noted that the controversy surrounding her has been intense, stating on social media, “It’s all about this campaign because you lost the race,” referencing her conflict with Riley Gaines, a prominent figure advocating for women’s rights in sports. Gaines had previously challenged Biles, labeling her an idol for many young female athletes.

Meanwhile, Trump’s presence at the Open is not without its critics. Late-night host Stephen Colbert took aim at the former president after he labeled Chicago the “worst and most dangerous” city on social media. Colbert responded in his monologue with a blunt “F— you!” following Trump’s comments.

Other famous faces, like actor Alec Baldwin and producer Shonda Rhimes, have also shown up, with Baldwin previously criticizing Trump’s actions in Washington, D.C. Rhimes has distanced herself from associations with Trump, notably turning down a chance to tie with the Kennedy Center once he became chairman.

As for the event itself, USTA’s Amanda Wight explained that inviting high-profile guests helps market the tournament. She emphasized that celebrity presence greatly enhances visibility and engagement for the event.

Trump’s attendance is confirmed by USTA, although details about who invited him remain unclear. The men’s final will feature Alcaraz facing Giannik Sinner, and Alcaraz acknowledged the significance of having the president in attendance, adding, “It’s great for tennis.” He admitted, however, that he tries not to dwell on the pressure that come with such a notable audience.
