Several prominent left-wing actors, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Robert De Niro, Noah Wyle, and Martin Sheen, participated in a political public service announcement, where they solemnly promised to “defend the Constitution” in light of the upcoming midterm elections.
In a video shared on the American Constitution Society’s Instagram page, they each introduced themselves: “Hi, I’m Jamie Lee Curtis, Noah Wyle, Robert De Niro, J. Michael Luttig, Ramón Gerard Estévez, AKA Martin Sheen, Dr. Isaiah Ike Wilson III, Colonel United States Army retired.”
Following their introductions, the video presented each actor delivering a portion of a pledge, which was interspersed with cuts to others finishing the statements.
The group recited, “And I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”
They continued, “That I will continue to bear true faith and allegiance to the same, and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion.”
Curtis expressed her pride in affirming her oath to the Constitution, after which all the participants collectively stated, “And I hope you will, too.”
The pledge they recited closely mirrors the oath of office that is used by Congress members, military personnel, and new citizens, although the specific phrasing does vary slightly in different contexts.
Interestingly, the group chose to leave out the phrase, “So help me God,” which is typically included in those official versions of the oath.
According to the caption of the American Constitution Society’s Instagram post, “This Constitution Day, we’re launching The Oath Project — a nonpartisan invitation to record and share an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
The caption encouraged viewers to add their voices to this initiative, inviting them to record their own oath or share it with their community, emphasizing a personal touch.
