Richard Blace Embraces Edible Insects in New Series

Richard Blace, the well-known chef and reality TV figure, is diving into a rather unique culinary adventure by collaborating with the pest control company, Orkin. Together, they’ll explore a variety of edible insects, including ants, scorpions, and even tarantulas, in a digital series named “Bug Bites.” This series is set to launch on August 19th and is designed not only to entertain but also to educate viewers about these unconventional ingredients.

“I connected with Orkin and one of their entomologists to experiment with different types of insects,” Blace shared from his kitchen in California. “We’re literally tasting insects!”

Although Blace is an accomplished chef, notably a judge on “Next Level Chef” and a winner of “Top Chef: All Stars,” he hasn’t completely switched from traditional dishes. “I’m not just cooking insects,” he clarified. “If you had asked me last year what I wanted on set, it wouldn’t have been bugs.”

He perceives this venture as a competitive reality show that happens to focus on creepy crawlies. “It’s entertaining to see someone trying to eat a tarantula,” he remarked, emphasizing the amusement factor involved.

The “Bug Bites” series features five gourmet recipes that include offerings like soft shell tarantula sushi rolls and mealworm pesto pasta, as well as a dessert of vanilla ice cream topped with scorpion-fried rice and black ants.

Reflecting on his culinary experiments, Blace confessed he was pleasantly surprised by how these ingredients can actually taste. “There’s a surprising range of flavors,” he noted. Some insects, such as grasshoppers, have been described to taste somewhat like citrus or even lavender. He assured that entomologists confirm these ingredients are safe.

Yet, he doesn’t anticipate seeing insect-based dishes taking over restaurant menus anytime soon. “I think it’s a cool concept,” he stated, but added cautiously, “will it become popular overnight? Probably not.”

Blace expressed a love for traditional foods and, just before our chat, mentioned enjoying an eight-ounce medium-rare filet at one of his establishments. “I’m just a guy who loves burgers, pizza, and tacos… the everyday food,” he shared.

He encouraged others to remain open-minded about trying new things, including edible insects. “Give it a shot,” he urged. “You might not like it, but why not try?”
