A cruise ship encountered a crisis off the coast of Greece recently, prompting help from local authorities, as reported by the coast guard. Over the weekend, a passenger shared on Reddit about the turmoil aboard the Celebrity Infinity cruise ship. They detailed, “Power outage off the coast of Piraeus (Athens) at 3 AM,” describing a chaotic atmosphere.
The passenger recounted witnessing multiple tugboats arriving while they experienced a lack of air conditioning. Conditions aboard were challenging, with no lights, running water, flushing toilets, hot water, or even coffee. “There is no ETA for the fix,” they noted, also mentioning a concerning announcement of “Bravo, bravo, bravo,” which typically signals serious emergencies like fires.
According to a press release, the Greek Coast Guard’s Command informed authorities about a “loss of control” due to a switchboard issue while the ship was outside Piraeus. Thankfully, four tugboats assisted in bringing the ship safely to port.
The ship’s next planned journey, an 11-night trip starting from Piraeus, has been canceled. Reports suggest it was supposed to visit the Greek Islands andTürkiye. The passengers had originally embarked on a 13-day trip from Barcelona.
There was some confusion initially, with an alert stating the incident happened on February 14, but authorities later clarified it was actually February 15. One passenger described waking up to the sound of a transformer blowing — a startling experience, to say the least. They recounted how the crew made disembarkation optional at first, but later directed everyone to leave the ship to find accommodation.
Celebrity Cruises has since communicated with those booked on future sailings to the Greek Islands and Türkiye, indicating that further evaluations and repairs are needed for the ship. They apologized for the inconvenience this unexpected change may cause. Passengers were also informed about compensations and credits. Amidst this, one passenger commended the crew for their handling of the entire situation, remarking on the challenges faced without technology.
