Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates for First Time in Three Years
The Federal Reserve has decided to increase interest rates for the first time in three years, a measure aimed at addressing elevated inflation levels.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) indicated that rates would rise by a quarter percentage point, establishing a new range of 3.75% to 4%.
The committee continues to target a 2% inflation rate, a benchmark that has not been achieved in the U.S. since 2020, as noted by the U.S. Inflation Calculator.
“For over five years, inflation has consistently exceeded our target,” Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh remarked during a Wednesday press conference. “The simple truth is that inflation remains too high and has persisted for far too long.”
All twelve members of the committee voted unanimously in favor of raising the federal funds rate. Despite the high inflation levels, the FOMC conveyed a positive outlook regarding the overall economy.
“Economic activity is increasing at a healthy rate. While there are still uncertainties, partly due to geopolitical factors, domestic spending has shown resilience,” the statement stated. “Productivity is growing robustly, and capital investment remains strong. Job increases are matching workforce growth, and the unemployment rate has remained stable.”
On the other hand, this decision does not align with the preferences of President Donald Trump, who took to Truth Social to advocate for lower interest rates following the announcement.
“Interest rates in the United States should be 1% or lower, as we are by far the best credit in the world. Our country is booming with new investment! If we ceased trading with every nation where we have a deficit, which is most of them, we could generate at least 1.5 trillion dollars a year,” the president stated.
He further added, “The term ‘deficit’ is just a sophisticated way of saying ‘loss.’ We are essentially supporting almost every country globally, and this cannot continue.” He concluded with, “Lower the interest rates for the United States of America, and do it fast!”
