Early Spring Warm-Up Quickly Cools Off
This week, Central Park experienced an unexpected early taste of spring, with temperatures soaring to a record 80 degrees on Tuesday. However, the warmth is about to take a sharp turn, plunging back to the 30s shortly.
Strong winds paired with colder air are set to wrap up this uncharacteristically warm March by late Thursday, which means a brisk St. Patrick’s Day weekend is on the horizon.
Bob Larson, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather, shared some sobering news, saying, “Spring doesn’t just flip on like a switch.” He cautioned New Yorkers that a “setback” was imminent, reminding everyone that we are still in mid-March.
On Tuesday afternoon, the 80-degree temperature marked the earliest day of its kind, surpassing the previous record, which was set back in 1990 when it hit 85 degrees on March 13.
This warmth has encouraged many to flock outdoors, filling parks with people soaking up the sun and pulling out picnic blankets.
Interestingly, Larson noted that the temperatures felt more like those typically seen in mid-June, which is quite a leap for this time of year.
Central Park wasn’t alone in breaking records, as Newark reached 82 degrees, Hartford hit 79, and LaGuardia recorded 78 degrees—all new highs for the area.
The day’s remarkable warmth came thanks to the perfect mix of sunshine and gentle winds. According to Larson, “To break a record, conditions need to be just right, and yesterday, everything came together beautifully.”
However, temperatures on Thursday morning might begin similarly to Wednesday’s low 50s but are expected to drop into the 40s by the afternoon, with a night chill settling at around 32 degrees.
The forecast looks bleak for the weekend, featuring overcast skies and a continued cool snap, with highs struggling to reach 38 degrees on Sunday.
On Monday, artist Anya Zarypova, 39, embraced the nice weather, spending the day at the park. “I was just wandering around my favorite trails, soaking everything up. It’s been a while, and I’m a summer person,” she said with a smile.
Giulia Spena, a 35-year-old from Italy, was initially hesitant to visit given recent weather warnings, but she found herself pleasantly surprised by the sunshine and warmth. “My brother nearly convinced me to stay home a few days ago. This is a nice change!”
Frédéric Ferrag, a 52-year-old visiting from Paris, also took advantage of the beautiful day, mentioning how the weather felt “very comfortable” for biking around the park. “It’s quite nice compared to what I’ve experienced lately. It’s just… crazy,” he laughed.
