A prominent CEO from the U.S. tragically lost her life in a devastating tourist accident in Nicaragua while vacationing with her husband and three young children, one of whom was severely injured.
Casey Grell, 41, who worked at a St. Louis-based marketing consulting firm called Aux Insights, passed away on March 23 when a tourist transport vehicle carrying her family and other travelers overturned at the Rancho Santana resort in Tola, Nicaragua, as reported by her grieving family.
Her 11-year-old son, Julian, sustained serious injuries and was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis, as detailed in a family fundraising campaign on GoFundMe.
According to that campaign, he incurred head trauma, a fractured skull, a fractured vertebra, and a collapsed lung.
Grell is survived by her husband, Dave, and their three young children: Julian, Kit, 9, and Des, 6.
Her brother, Andy Joyce, expressed his devastation, stating, “We are shocked to announce the tragic passing of our sister Casey.” In a Facebook post on April 1, he explained, “Casey was on a family vacation in Nicaragua. She and her children, Kit and Julian, were on a resort tour when the driver lost control, resulting in the car overturning and Casey’s death, along with Julian’s serious injuries.”
Joyce remembered Casey as “one of the most intelligent, driven, and selfless people I’ve ever met” and highlighted her relentless spirit, particularly in her efforts to assist others.
The GoFundMe initiative created to support the children has surpassed its original goal of $250,000, raising over $302,000 as of Saturday.
In the accident, a transport truck carrying around 28 foreign tourists lost control while descending a hill within the resort premises, resulting in injuries to more than 20 individuals, including children. An Nicaraguan news source reported that the vehicle rolled over after reversing.
The injured were initially treated at the scene by both resort personnel and paramedics before being transported to Gaspar García La Laiana Hospital in Rivas.
While en route to the hospital, Grell succumbed to her injuries, which included severe head trauma and a reported skull fracture.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing, as stated by the Nicaraguan National Police.
Grell had been the primary breadwinner for her family following her husband’s serious injury in a prior incident, according to the GoFundMe page.
She co-founded Aux Insights, providing strategic marketing consulting to private equity firms, focusing on revenue growth and enhancing company performance.
In a 2025 podcast interview, Grell mentioned that her company had achieved over $10 million in annual revenue within its first two years and operated profitably from the outset without any external financing.
Before founding Aux Insights, Grell had experience in venture capital and corporate transactions, including a stint as CEO of Gateway Media, where she played a key role in restructuring the company and reducing $40 million in debt prior to its sale.
She began her career as a television news reporter and later earned an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis before shifting to finance and entrepreneurship.
