Planned Parenthood Rejects Medicaid Due to Budget Cuts

Some Planned Parenthood clinics have started to refuse Medicaid, following a Republican budget proposal that cuts federal funding. This change has been announced by locations in Colorado and Washington, D.C., which informed patients this week that they can no longer use Medicaid coverage at these facilities.

Reportedly, the adjustments stem from a Settlement Bill passed on July 4, 2025, which prevents health centers affiliated with Planned Parenthood from accepting Medicaid for patient care in the D.C. area. The organization has described this legislative “rebate” as harsh and detrimental, impacting health services for millions across the metropolitan region and beyond.

Similarly, Colorado affiliates have made a comparable announcement regarding Medicaid cuts. The timing coincided with a federal district judge’s ruling aimed at blocking Congress’s attempts to provide funding to abortion clinics. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani temporarily restrained these efforts on the same day a lawsuit was filed, halting Medicaid reimbursements for 14 days.

Reactions from affiliated clinics have varied; while some are resuming Medicaid services, others are taking a cautious approach due to the legal ambiguity. For instance, clinics in Florida have indicated that scheduling for Medicaid patients will resume following the judge’s order. This has created an environment of tension, as many appointments had to be canceled recently, affecting both patients and staff significantly.

Planned Parenthood claims that the cuts have impacted approximately 200 employees and put the clinic’s operations in jeopardy. Legislative actions to reimburse abortion providers circumvented the need for a 60-vote majority typically required in the Senate. While federal funds for abortion are restricted by the Hyde Amendment—allowing exceptions only in cases of rape, incest, or threats to the mother’s life—opponents argue that taxpayer money should not support entities that perform abortions.
