Certain Social Security recipients will receive two payments in December.

In December, some Social Security beneficiaries will see two checks due to a scheduling error that rolls payments into the next month.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) usually processes Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments on the first day of each month. This program serves to provide essential monthly payments to eligible seniors and individuals with disabilities who may not have sufficient income. It’s worth noting that this system is different from the regular Social Security retirement benefits.

If the first day of a month occurs on a weekend or a federal holiday, the SSI payments are sent out on the last business day of the previous month. This ensures that recipients receive their funds before the new month starts, which helps them cover any immediate expenses they might face.

This year, thanks to the 2025 calendar, two SSI payments will be disbursed in December. The first check will arrive on December 1st, providing benefits for that month. Then, on Wednesday, December 31st, beneficiaries will receive a second payment that covers January’s benefits.

As is typical, these payments are generally made via direct deposit. However, those who prefer not to use a bank account or who find it more convenient can receive payments through a Direct Express card instead.

In a push to streamline payments, SSA discontinued paper checks in late September, following a directive from the Trump administration earlier this year to transition all federal payments to electronic formats. This means most payments now go directly into bank accounts or onto debit cards.

According to SSA data, more than 68 million Americans were receiving Social Security benefits as of September. Out of these, close to 390,000 individuals—approximately 0.6%—were still receiving paper checks.

For those who want to switch to direct deposit, the SSA’s website offers options through the My Social Security portal or via phone with SSA representatives or the Department of the Treasury’s Center for Electronic Payment Solutions. Alternatively, beneficiaries can also visit a financial institution to set up their details.
