Ceuta Delegate Resigns Amid Migrant Crisis

The representative of the Spanish central government in Ceuta unexpectedly resigned on Monday, citing what he described as “unfair pressure” from local residents, whose angry comments have been particularly hurtful. This resignation comes as the migrant invasion of the exclave approaches its second month.

In Spain, government delegations act as officials who represent and supervise the central administration within each autonomous community, managing various matters on the local level.

For the past seven months, Miguel Ángel Pérez Triano, a native of Ceuta, held the position of Delegate to Ceuta for the socialist central government. He faced immense criticism from frustrated locals who are demanding immediate action to address the worsening conditions following the mass influx of migrants from Morocco that began in late July.

Two months into the crisis, the situation remains unresolved, with thousands of migrants still believed to be living in the city or housed in temporary centers established by the government.

Pérez Triano made his resignation announcement during a press statement, expressing that his recent work environment has felt “very hostile,” affecting him and his family significantly. “After discussing it with my family, I have decided to step aside and let someone else continue the work that still lies ahead,” he stated.

He expressed frustration about experiencing what he deemed “unfair pressure, insults, and a smear campaign filled with rumors and lies.” He found it “curious” how many people have mixed up the facts, noting that as a government delegate, he lacks control over numerous issues he’s being blamed for.

“I have faced ongoing harassment, including insults and threats,” he said, adding that a funeral wreath was even left at the entrance of the government delegation office. “That, too, is violence.”

Earlier this month, residents of Ceuta did leave a funeral wreath outside the local government offices, labeled “Rest in Peace. For your Political Death,” as one of several peaceful protests demanding government solutions for the ongoing crisis.

Reportedly, Pérez Triano didn’t just resign as head of the Government Delegation to Ceuta; he also stepped down from all political positions, including his role as secretary general of the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) in Ceuta.

This resignation follows controversy surrounding an alleged discussion between Pérez Triano and his former chief of staff regarding prior warnings from Spanish intelligence about the impending migrant invasion. Pérez Triano testified previously that he hadn’t received such a warning, which led to his chief of staff’s resignation, as the latter claimed he had relayed it to the delegate.

According to reports, Pérez Triano did not take any questions from journalists following his announcement. The central government has not yet appointed a new delegate for Ceuta. The response to the ongoing crisis by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government has faced substantial backlash, fueling widespread protests not only in Ceuta but also in several cities across mainland Spain, where solidarity for the beleaguered city has been notably strong, even appearing at soccer matches.
