The College Football Playoff Selection Committee has just unveiled its newest rankings.
Interestingly, the updated bracket features some unexpected twists.
Oregon State managed to defeat the ranked USC and surpassed Ole Miss. It’s worth noting that Ole Miss had a quiet week until they played against Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl this Friday. That’s really the only alteration in the top 10 since last week.
In today’s discussions, Miami has risen to No. 12, pushing Utah State down to No. 13. Last weekend, Utah had to rally to beat Kansas State with a record of 5-6. Miami, while sitting four spots behind Notre Dame—whom they bested in their season opener—has positioned itself as the leading team in the ACC within this virtual bracket.
However, the Hurricanes will need to clinch a win against Pittsburgh this weekend, along with some luck, to have any shot at the ACC Championship Game. Currently, SMU and Virginia seem the most likely candidates to make it to that title game.
If the Hurricanes were to miss out on the ACC Championship Game, they would need to carve out their identity as a significant contender, which can be quite the challenge from a No. 12 spot.
Meanwhile, No. 11 BYU is currently the highest-ranked team that has been left out of the bracket.
Tulane holds its place at No. 24, continuing to represent the Group 5 conference.
Below are the latest rankings from the committee and a hypothetical overview of the bracket.
