Changes to Capital One Lounge Access

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and its business counterpart have gained popularity in recent years due to their attractive perks, such as a $300 annual travel credit and anniversary bonus miles, along with access to airport lounges.

However, there have been some updates regarding these benefits, and unfortunately, they aren’t favorable. Capital One has decided to modify the lounge access terms for both cards, and the changes are largely seen as negative. For instance, access to lounges, which could be a real asset, is going to change, particularly with crowding becoming a more prevalent issue.

Capital One Lounge Access Changes Coming February 2026

From February 1, 2026, modifications to the Capital One Lounge Access will take effect. These adjustments will impact access to both Capital One Lounges and Priority Pass Lounges, differing slightly between personal and business cards due to their existing lounge access privileges.

The alterations will primarily focus on two areas: access for certified users and guest privileges. To provide some context, here’s the existing lounge access policy:

For Capital One Venture X:

  • Primary cardholders and up to four certified users will share the same lounge access benefits without additional costs for adding certified users.
  • Cardholders can access Capital One Lounges with two guests and Capital One Landings with one guest.
  • Additionally, they will receive a Priority Pass membership allowing two guest entries.

For Capital One Venture X Business:

  • Only primary cardholders will enjoy lounge access perks; certified users won’t receive these benefits.
  • Similar to the personal version, cardholders have access to Capital One Lounges and Landings with corresponding guest allowances.
  • They will also receive a Priority Pass membership for two guests for free.

The reasoning behind these changes is explained as follows:

With the growing popularity of airport lounges, we’ve noticed increasing wait times for entry. It’s essential to continue offering premium travel cards at competitive prices while ensuring a positive lounge experience for Venture X customers.

To address this issue, we’ll modify access for additional cardholders and guests. Primary cardholders will maintain free access to over 1,300 lounges, including Capital One Lounges and Priority Pass lounges.

New Lounge Access Fee for Certified Users

Starting February 1, 2026, certified users of the Capital One Venture X will not automatically enjoy lounge access. Instead, primary cardholders will be able to pay $125 for each authorized user to gain access.

This shift affects both personal and business cards, marking a significant adjustment from the previous policy where adding certified users for free was possible, potentially costing up to $500 under the new system.

From February 2026, cardholders will have to specify whether authorized users can access lounges, with the default being that they won’t unless the fee is paid.

Annual Spending Requirement for Guests

Beginning February 1, 2026, both Venture X and Venture X Business cardholders will no longer receive automatic guest access to Capital One Lounges and Landings. Instead, only those who spend $75,000 annually on their accounts will maintain these privileges.

To clarify:

  • The $75,000 spending threshold is per calendar year across all cardholders on the account.
  • This will start counting expenses from 2025, with spending influencing access next year as well.
  • Guest privileges apply to both primary and certified users who have previously paid the $125 access fee.
  • Additionally, lounge entry will be available at a rate of $45 per adult and $25 for guests under 17, with no charge for kids under 2.

Priority Pass Benefits Adjustments

From February 1, 2026, the Priority Pass membership tied to the Venture X card will no longer include guest allowances. This change will specifically impact personal cardholders, while business cardholders will still be allowed two free guests.

Henceforth, individuals with a Priority Pass membership will incur a $35 fee per guest at lounges, regardless of the $75,000 spending threshold. Guests can only access Capital One Lounges and Landings.

My Thoughts on These Changes

Unquestionably, these modifications to the Capital One Venture X lounge access are disheartening. Cardholders may find their benefits have diminished significantly. While it’s been nearly five years since the card’s launch, it’s not surprising to see necessary changes.

In light of rising lounge congestion, these adjustments might reduce crowding, as authorized users now have to pay for access, and free guest allowances are contingent on meeting substantial spending requirements. On a brighter note, the business version still reasonably offers access for additional users, though that’s a bit of a mixed blessing.

When assessing new guest spending requirements, the Venture X card remains advantageous for everyday expenses, helping many customers meet their thresholds efficiently.

This shift might lead some to reconsider their cards, though I personally don’t plan to cancel mine. The annual fee remains justifiable given the travel credit and bonus miles. Yet, it’s worth noting that restrictions on guest access in lounges could disappoint many who enjoyed prior privileges.

The trend reflects broader dynamics among premium credit cards. Issuers are grappling for a larger share of the market, and these changes likely cater to both the demand for access and the economic realities of providing such services.

Conclusion

Starting February 2026, Capital One is implementing substantial modifications to its Venture X Lounge Access policy.

Every authorized user on both personal and business cards will incur a $125 fee for lounge access. This represents a significant devaluation for personal cardholders while improving terms for businesses. A $75,000 annual spending requirement will now dictate guest access, and the personal version will eliminate free guests in Priority Pass lounges.

These developments could prompt many to reevaluate their cards. For me, though, the core value of Venture X remains intact. Lounge congestion is a real concern, so perhaps these changes will help address that issue.
