A moment of silence for conservative activist Charlie Kirk was interrupted by a loud outburst during Wednesday’s session in the House.
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) called for a prayer, breaking the silence that had been called by House Speaker Mike Johnson.
“Let’s take a moment to pray for Charlie Kirk and his family,” Johnson urged.
After a brief pause, the lawmakers quickly shifted back to regular proceedings when Boebert insisted that a quiet prayer wouldn’t have the same impact.
When she requested the prayer to be “loud,” several Democrats reacted with shouts of “no.” According to Fox News:
At that moment, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla) stood up and shouted, “You guys have caused this.”
House Speaker Johnson attempted multiple times to restore order, finally stating: “We’ll join together for prayer right after this.”
Charlie Kirk was shot while addressing a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. He leaves behind his wife and two children. President Trump expressed his condolences upon hearing the news.
“The legendary Charlie Kirk has passed away,” Trump stated. “No one understood the youth of America better than Charlie. He was a friend to many, including myself, and now he’s gone. My deepest sympathies go to his family, especially his wife Erica. Charlie, you will be missed!”
Democratic leaders have condemned the assassination of Charlie Kirk as a senseless act of political violence.
“To be clear, regardless of one’s beliefs, violence should never be the answer. What happened today at Utah Valley University is unacceptable,” they stated.
“Political violence, in any form, has no place in America. As I noted during the tragic events last summer involving my friends Melissa and Mark Hortman, such violence has unfortunately become too common.”
