Chargers' Day 3 NFL draft surprises feature a receiver, offensive lineman, and edge rusher.

The Chargers are heading into the NFL Draft with only five picks, four of which fall within the first 123 selections. Notably, they hold the 22nd overall pick in the first round.

As of now, they’re lacking picks in the fifth and seventh rounds, with their last selection being at No. 204 in the sixth round.

This puts a bit of pressure on their strategy, especially considering their primary needs: interior offensive line, wide receiver, defensive tackle, and edge rusher. Here are some noteworthy prospects to keep on the radar.

Skyler Bell, wide receiver, UConn

What’s intriguing about Bell is his rising stock in the draft process. The NFL is closely evaluating him again in these final stages. As more teams show interest, his draft position may improve significantly. Once seen as a potential fourth-round pick, he is now being viewed as a candidate for Day 2.

Bell put together an impressive season last year, catching 101 passes for 1,278 yards and scoring 13 touchdowns. While he may not boast the height or speed some players have—measuring just over 5’11” and running a 4.4 in the 40—he is a versatile and tough receiver, capable of making plays all over the field. He could fit well in Mike McDaniel’s offensive scheme.

Billy Schlaus, offensive line, Notre Dame

At 6-4 and 310 pounds, Schlaus has showcased his talents on significant platforms for Ireland. Unfortunately, a knee injury cut his season short, yet he still managed to earn second-team All-America honors.

While he should work on his physical strength, especially in run blocking, he excels in pass protection. His potential as a developing player on Day 3 could be valuable.

Logan Fano, Utah Edge

Fano, standing at 6-5 and weighing 257 pounds, possesses the build to thrive as an edge player in the NFL. Even if he doesn’t become a full-time starter, he could effectively contribute in a rotation.

Known for his relentless defense, he shows promise as a solid run-stopper. Although he still has work to do on his pass-rushing skills, he has the traits necessary to improve. After overcoming two knee injuries early in his career, he managed to stay relatively healthy over the past two seasons, logging 1,168 snaps.

In addition, he registered 34 total pressures—including five sacks—along with 34 tackles defending against the run.

Cameron Ball, defensive tackle, Arkansas

Having depth in the interior defensive line is crucial, especially for a team that rotates players throughout games. Ball might not become an every-down starter, but his presence in the rotation would still be beneficial, making him a worthwhile Day 3 pick.

Weighing in at 6-4 and 310 pounds, he relies more on quickness and technique than sheer strength to succeed. His stats suggest effectiveness; according to Pro Football Focus, he recorded 21 pressures, including 18 rushes and three quarterback hits, along with 23 tackles in run defense.
