Charges Dropped Against Delaware State University Students

Four students from Delaware State University have had charges against them dismissed, following a “takeover” event in Rehoboth Beach that has raised concerns about youth gatherings across the nation.

Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings instructed prosecutors to drop all charges against the students, identified as Xander Nicole, Angeline Crouville, Keyon Scott, and Eric Barnett. This announcement was reported on Friday.

The Rehoboth Beach Police Department noted that during the May 19 takeover, the crowd was increasing, raising safety concerns. As a result, several businesses on the boardwalk chose to close early.

Police stated, “As the situation intensified, additional assistance was requested, with Delaware State Police, Department of Natural Resources, and other local police departments responding to address rising safety issues for both people and property.”

Matt Marshall, a spokesperson for the Delaware Department of Justice, commented on the situation, saying that the Attorney General found no factual basis to pursue charges against the individuals involved and directed prosecutors to dismiss all charges related to the incident.

Video footage captured during the event showed multiple police vehicles arriving at the scene, and reports indicated that officers were seen patrolling the area.

Local residents expressed their worries, with one woman asking about the safety of visitors and children. “I’m concerned for those who come here regularly. Is it safe for them?” she said.

Some attendees at the event faced arrests for various offenses, including disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, underage drinking, and public marijuana use.

On May 20, law enforcement announced that a Delaware State University student was sought for charges of second-degree rioting and conspiracy related to this incident, marking the fifth such event since April.

Reports have indicated that many cities across the U.S. are grappling with violent “teen takeovers” characterized by reckless driving, property damage, and other chaotic behaviors, prompting concerns and warnings from police and community leaders.
