Charlamagne Reacts to Van Jones’ Critique of Zoran Mamdani’s Speech
On Wednesday, radio host Charlamagne the God confronted CNN’s Van Jones after Jones criticized the victory speech by New York City Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani.
During his election night address, Jones suggested that Mamdani had undergone a “personality switch” and missed a chance to connect more strongly with New Yorkers following a hard-fought campaign. He remarked, “I think he missed an opportunity tonight to open up and bring more people into the tent.” Jones criticized Mamdani’s tone, saying it was excessively sharp and loud, contrasting with his previous, more relaxed public persona.
Charlamagne had strong words for Jones, telling him to “shut up forever.” He defended Mamdani by emphasizing the importance of celebrating a victory. “The guy just won,” he stated. “After he wins, yes, he’s going to celebrate. Yes, he’s going to be loud.” He criticized the idea that politicians need to stick to a specific language and tone, suggesting that the traditional decorum of politics has changed significantly.
Charlamagne seemed baffled by what Jones found objectionable in Mamdani’s speech, speculating that it might be related to Mamdani’s comments targeting wealthy landowners and referencing Trump. “If anyone can teach the people betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it’s the city that produced him,” Mamdani had remarked in his speech.
Charlamagne argued that Mamdani was simply challenging capitalism, a significant issue that he felt should be addressed. He questioned why Jones would find such rhetoric divisive.
The conversation shifted when former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan was invited to provide context regarding Jones’ critique. Hasan noted that it was curious Jones had previously praised a Trump speech but found Mamdani, who aims to unite a diverse coalition, to be divisive instead. “That says more about Van Jones than it does about Zoran Mamdani,” Hasan concluded.
