Charlamagne Has Difficulty Understanding the News of CBS Canceling Stephen Colbert's Show

Charlamagne Tha God’s Reaction to CBS Announcement

Radio host Charlamagne Tha God had a lively response to CBS’s announcement made on Thursday, which came to light on Friday.

This announcement comes after CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global, settled a lawsuit with former President Donald Trump regarding an edited “60 Minutes” interview with ex-Vice President Kamala Harris from October 2024. On the Breakfast Club, it was suggested that these events signal a troubling rise in Trump’s authoritarian tendencies.

“Let’s call it for what it is,” Charlamagne stated. “Paramount is seeking FCC approval for Skydance’s merger, and Trump could block it if he chooses. The cancellation of Colbert’s show seems like a calculated move to appease Trump.” He went on to describe this type of conduct as textbook authoritarianism, noting that it often involves targeting critics and attempts at maintaining control through fear. “And you know what? It usually results in silence.”

He further elaborated, “We are witnessing an increase in control over public discourse. The message being sent is clear: criticizing Trump could have serious consequences for media outlets regarding access and editorial freedom. This is typical of authoritarian regimes. What transpired with Paramount and Trump feels like a form of blackmail turned into a legitimate legal strategy. Isn’t this the administration that claimed to oppose censorship? Isn’t this about supporting free speech?”

Colbert, known for his frequent critiques of Trump, hosted one of the leading late-night shows on US television. Reports indicate that his cancellation comes despite strong ratings.

In a surprising twist, Fox News’ “Gutfeld!” outperformed Colbert’s show, reportedly attracting over 800,000 more viewers in the second quarter of 2025.

“Just so you know, when the number one rated late-night show ends, it’s a warning,” Charlamagne remarked. “This doesn’t just silence the highest-rated show; it sends a message—speak out, and we’ll shut you down. It’s a classic authoritarian tactic.”

He lamented, “We’re already under a severely authoritarian regime. This goes beyond media; it’s a slow-motion funeral for free speech.” Charlamagne added that Paramount could easily pay Trump to gain merger approval, saying, “It’s not really business—it’s a horror story in a suit. Colbert didn’t just stop his show by chance; the truth is often dangerous in a place where those in power resist hearing it.”

Colbert himself referred to the settlement with Trump as a “big fat bribe” during a show on Monday, according to reports.

Nonetheless, CBS executives claimed the cancellation was solely a financial decision. They emphasized, “This is purely about finances in the tough late-night landscape and is not related to the show’s performance or any other concern at Paramount.”
