Charles Barkley Criticizes LeBron James’ Anthem Behavior

Charles Barkley expressed his disapproval of LeBron James practicing his golf swing during the national anthem before a recent game for the Philadelphia 76ers. He described this behavior as “childish” and “ridiculous,” especially considering James’ background of overcoming significant obstacles to achieve his current success.

Former President Donald Trump also weighed in, condemning James as a “total disgrace.” While Barkley made it clear that he doesn’t pay attention to Trump’s opinions, he did agree with the sentiment that James showed disrespect to the anthem.

During a SiriusXM NBA Radio segment, Barkley noted, “I don’t pay what President Trump says any attention… But I thought that was very disrespectful, practicing your golf swing in the middle of the anthem.” He emphasized the importance of standing for the anthem, stating that it represents a great country that allows for protest, but cautioned about being mindful during such moments.

This wasn’t the first time James chose to practice his swing at an inopportune moment. Last Christmas, while with the Los Angeles Lakers, he was also seen doing the same before a game against the Houston Rockets.

Barkley continued, stating that he stands for the anthem not just as a formality, but in support of free speech and the troops. He acknowledged that while everyone has the right to protest, there’s a degree of care that must be taken when it comes to the anthem. “I always stand for the anthem. I think it’s important, and I think it’s significant,” he said.

Interestingly, while Barkley discussed the significance of protests, it seemed that James wasn’t actively protesting anything this time. Instead, it appeared that he simply couldn’t remain still, which inadvertently disrespected the anthem.

James’ previous antics during the anthem had drawn criticism before, particularly a notable incident in 2023. He arrived late to a USC game to watch his son Bronny, and, disturbingly, chose to enter during the anthem while wearing a hat, sitting down when the rest of the crowd stood in respect.
