Charles Barkley Speaks Out on Immigration Issues

Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley expressed strong disapproval of the treatment of certain immigrants during a recent sports broadcast, calling it “a travesty and a disgrace.”

Barkley addressed this issue while discussing a University of Connecticut basketball player, Alex Karavan, who is the son of immigrants from Belarus. He noted, “This is a very sensitive subject for me, so I want to be very careful with my words,” expressing admiration for Karavan and his family but lamenting how some immigrants are currently being treated in the U.S.

He elaborated, “I think there’s a difference between great immigrants and criminal immigrants. What’s happening to some of these good immigrants is really sad and unfortunate.” Barkley added that many inspiring immigrant stories deserve recognition, emphasizing that “immigrants built this country, and we should celebrate and respect them.”

While he didn’t specify what he meant by inappropriate treatment, his comments resonated broadly and were circulated widely across social media.

Barkley has a history of commenting on political matters, most notably defending athletes who opted not to kneel during Black Lives Matter protests, arguing that individuals should not be “vilified” for their beliefs.

Additionally, Barkley has contemplated running for governor in Alabama, noting a growing discontent with both major political parties. In previous remarks, he commented, “I think most people, regardless of race, are good, but our political system benefits from dividing us.” His views consistently reflect a nuanced perspective on social issues.
