Charles Kushner Confirmed as Ambassador to France and Monaco
On Monday, the U.S. Senate confirmed property developer Charles Kushner as ambassador to France and Monaco with a vote of 51-45.
Kushner, who is Ivanka Trump’s stepfather, had previously received a pardon from former President Donald Trump regarding issues related to federal tax evasion and violations of election laws dating back to 2005.
He founded the Kushner Company in 1985 and has a history of philanthropy, especially towards Jewish causes, including Yeshiva University in Washington Heights, Manhattan. He has also contributed to hospitals like St. Barnabas in Essex County, New Jersey.
During his confirmation hearing on May 1, Kushner spoke about his past legal troubles, suggesting they have enhanced his judgment and qualifications for the ambassadorial role. “I think my past mistakes actually make me… my worth better and I’m more qualified to do this job,” he stated to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Just after celebrating his 71st birthday, Kushner was nominated last November, with Trump calling him an “amazing business leader, philanthropist, and deal maker.”
Trump highlighted Kushner’s accolades, such as being the New Jersey Entrepreneur of the Year and his role on various significant boards, including the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council and the New York & New Jersey Port Authority. He mentioned Kushner’s family, including his wife, four children, and 14 grandchildren, and noted that Kushner’s son, Jared, had worked closely with him on major initiatives during Trump’s presidency.
Trump expressed confidence in Kushner’s ability to strengthen America’s partnerships with longstanding allies.
