Knicks owner confronts Mamdani at city event
James Dolan, the owner of the Knicks, seemingly confronted Mayor Zoran Mamdani during the team’s victory parade. He questioned whether Mamdani was truly a “real Knicks fan.” This incident occurred shortly after a public disagreement between the two at a championship viewing party.
In a related legal matter, a lawsuit initiated by former Knicks player Charles Oakley against Madison Square Garden and Dolan was dismissed for the third time on Friday.
This ongoing legal saga began back in February 2017 when Oakley was banned from Madison Square Garden following a confrontation with arena security personnel.
Initially, the lawsuit was dismissed in early 2020 and again in 2021. After being refiled in early 2023, it faced dismissal once more this week.
Michael Jordan and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver reportedly could not persuade Dolan to resolve his dispute with Oakley, the Knicks legend.
After his ejection from Madison Square Garden, Oakley was arrested, though the charges were later dropped. He subsequently filed a lawsuit claiming false imprisonment and defamation.
In a statement, Madison Square Garden announced plans to pursue legal action against Oakley’s lawyer, Douglas Windsor, along with his law firm, labeling their efforts as “frivolous litigation.” They asserted that Oakley’s legal team had advanced claims they knew to be false, as the court dismissed them for the third time.
Additionally, Oakley’s team expressed disappointment over the dismissal, arguing there were conflicting accounts and that only a jury could accurately determine the events that occurred. They are hopeful the Second Circuit will allow the case to proceed to trial.
Oakley, who stands at 6-foot-8, played over a decade for the Knicks. He contributed significantly to their 1994 NBA Finals run and earned spots in the All-Star and All-Defensive teams during that season. Despite his longstanding feud with Dolan, Oakley continued to support the team, attending several playoff games during New York’s recent championship journey, marking the first in over 50 years.
