Charley Hull, Georgia Hall offer entertaining Olympics preview at LPGA Dow Championship

Charlie Hull and Georgia Hall are best friends who grew up playing golf together and are both LPGA veterans.

This week they competed in the LPGA Dow Championship, a multi-format stroke-play team event at Midland Country Club in Midland, Michigan.

In the first and third rounds, the women will play foursomes or alternating shots, while in the second and final rounds they will play four-ball or best ball, similar to the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

The two have known each other since they were 11 years old and are celebrating 17 years of friendship. Hall calls him “George,” while the former AIG Women’s Open champion calls her best friend “Charles.”

“We live three minutes away from each other now and not a day goes by that we don’t talk,” Hall said.

The pair will also represent Great Britain at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Becoming an Olympian is a big deal, but doing it together is even more special for these two.

“George and I love playing golf together, so we’ve been spending time together,” Hull said. “It’s going to be a little busy this week, but it’s nice to be able to share time with my best friend, especially in moments like these.”

Despite their many Olympic duties, the two go shopping and Enjoy the experienceHall has never been to Paris, the city of love, and Hal has only been there once.

“You can share your first experience with me,” Hal said with a smile, “but to be honest, I’d love to go to Paris one day.”

“Yeah, let’s go shopping,” Hall said.

Olympic Shopping? Neither of them are big sports fans, but each has their own favorite events to watch: Hal wants to watch boxing, while Hall wants to check out gymnastics.

The best part was that they were able to compromise so they could spend as much time together as possible.

“You go to gymnastics and I go to boxing and we have to compete in each other’s matches,” Hull said.

This week, their team name is “Rose and Thorn,” given to them by their best friend Ryan Evans, and they also have a walk-up song called “Best Friend” by rapper Saweetie.

“Georgia asked Ryan, ‘Describe me and Charlie,’ and Ryan said, ‘Georgia, you’re like a beautiful English rose and Charlie, you’re like a thorn,’ and I said, ‘Oh, thank you, Ryan,'” Halle explained.

Hall acknowledged it was tough, but was quick to put her best friend at ease.

“There are a lot of thorns around the rose, so you’re protecting me,” Hall said.

“Yeah, I’ll protect her,” Hal replied with a cheeky grin.

This week at Michigan, they will leverage their connections to find success.

“If Charlie’s upset, I know it before she does, and she knows it,” Hall said. “We know each other really well, and I think that’s really important. At these events, we go out there and have fun.”

“One hundred percent,” Hal interjected. “George knows me better than I know myself.”

The pair are among 60 women competing at the Paris Olympics, which will be held at Le Golf National, site of the 2018 Ryder Cup.
