A tribute sign honoring Georgia businessman Charlie Kirk has drawn significant public interest following his recent murder. Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was tragically shot in the neck during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10.
Wayne Robinson, who runs a Steak ‘n Shake in Rome, Georgia, expressed his devastation over Kirk’s passing. “I’ve always been a follower of Charlie,” he noted, reflecting on Kirk’s impactful discussions with university students. “He was leading many young people to Christ… It hit me hard when I heard about the assassination.”
In response to Kirk’s death, Robinson acted quickly, notifying a marketing partner to create a sign in his honor. The billboard now states, “Charlie Kirk, 1993-2025,” along with the message “Stay up, speak up, stay boldly.”
“I don’t think he ever considered the kind of reaction that would follow his assassination,” Robinson added.
The tribute quickly gained traction, garnering millions of likes on social media, and Robinson mentioned the outreach was surprisingly supportive. “There are about 58,000 local comments,” he said, noting that many customers are visiting his shop just to honor Kirk and enjoy a meal.
After the billboard went viral, support poured in from across the country. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene shared a photo of the sign, prompting many to express their intent to support the chain. “I put up a Charlie Kirk sign so I’ll eat it with Steak ‘n Shake,” one person commented on X.
Robinson’s restaurant wasn’t the only one experiencing an influx of customers. He received calls of gratitude from states as far as Michigan, Wisconsin, and California. “People took the time to find us and thanked us for doing this,” he shared.
Shortly after the billboard gained attention, the corporate office for Steak ‘n Shake reached out. They acknowledged that all promotions typically go through the company but appreciated the tribute. Robinson mentioned that their owner liked it so much they were considering permissions for similar tributes nationwide. However, there has been no comment from Steak ‘n Shake regarding the tribute yet.
Despite still mourning Kirk, Robinson believes that the young man’s legacy is far-reaching, having touched many lives. “He sparked a much-needed revival across the country,” he said, adding, “The expressions of gratitude are incredible. I’m grateful for all he did.”
Robinson’s tribute is just one of several that have emerged in recent weeks. Other businesses, like a frozen yogurt shop in Idaho, faced backlash for their celebrations, while a group of Kirk’s supporters has petitioned Starbucks to honor him by adding his tea orders to menus nationwide.
