Charlie Kirk’s Advocate for Death Penalty Sparks Controversy

Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, has voiced his support for the death penalty multiple times. Recently, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson was named as the suspect in his assassination on the University of Utah campus. Utah Governor Spencer Cox indicated that the state might seek the death penalty if the case proceeds to trial, and even former President Donald Trump has expressed his backing for this outcome should Robinson be convicted.

Earlier in the year, Kirk discussed his perspective on the death penalty during a session with students. In a video posted on Turning Point USA’s YouTube, he defended his belief that the government should have the authority to execute individuals. When a student questioned how this aligns with advocating for limited government, Kirk suggested that those guilty of taking lives should face similar consequences.

“I believe in a small but strong government. Those who have taken lives should take their own, for the sake of justice,” Kirk stated. A student then challenged him, asking if this applies “under all circumstances.”

Kirk seemed to agree, answering, “Most of the time, yeah.” The student countered that the death penalty should be reserved for the most heinous crimes, yet did not elaborate further.

Ethics of the Death Penalty

“Why is it morally different to kill one person if you’ve killed ten?” Kirk posed to the group, asserting that even those who oppose the death penalty often hold exceptions. He further expressed that conservatives aim for blind justice, contrasting it with what he perceives as leftist advocacy for social justice, which, in his opinion, is sometimes influenced unduly by factors like race or wealth.

In discussions on his podcast in 2024, Kirk and his co-host debated issues related to the death penalty, even speculating about when children should be allowed to witness executions, suggesting that making the death penalty public could potentially deter crime. He insisted that such actions should be quick and out in the open.

Kirk was tragically fatally shot on September 10, 2025, while addressing an audience during an “American Comeback Tour” at Utah Valley University. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
