Charlie Kirk's ex-chief of staff responds to Mets broadcaster.

Mikey McCoy, who previously served as chief of staff for Charlie Kirk, criticized New York Mets announcer Gary Cohen for his negative remarks. McCoy shared a video of Kirk walking towards Wrigley Field, highlighting it as a dream come true for Kirk, who is a devoted fan. However, this moment sparked considerable backlash, especially after Cohen described the absence of a show from the Chicago lineup as “strange.”

“About a month ago, Charlie’s dream came true. He walked through Wrigley Field and saw his friend Matt Shaw hit a home run,” McCoy remarked on X.

“Now, a month later, after Charlie’s passing, Matt Shaw is facing criticism for attending a memorial for his friend. That’s embarrassing for Gary Cohen…”

Cohen expressed his thoughts during a game between the Mets and Cubs on Tuesday night. He said, “I don’t want to delve into the politics, but the idea of leaving the team for reasons other than a family emergency strikes me as a bit odd.” Fellow broadcaster Todd Zeil noted that such an absence from the show was “unprecedented.”

Shaw later clarified his reasoning for attending the memorial despite his team’s schedule. He mentioned, “My connection with Charlie came through our shared faith,” right before the Cubs commenced a series with the Mets. “My faith fuels me every day and without it, I wouldn’t be here,” he added.

Even with the backlash, Shaw felt strongly about his decision, emphasizing how blessed he is and that he could still contribute to the team’s success. The following night, he notably performed well, going 3-for-3 with a home run as the Cubs delivered a decisive 10-3 victory over the Mets.
