Charlie Sheen Reflects on His HIV Diagnosis and Personal Struggles

Charlie Sheen, who was diagnosed as HIV positive in 2011, shared his unexpected journey with grief in his new memoir, The Book of Sheen. The actor discussed how, despite the “shocking and depressing” nature of his diagnosis, he found a sense of “salvation” in it.

During a 2015 appearance on the “Today” show, Sheen revealed that medical professionals had identified the virusin his blood four years earlier. He was compelled to go public with his diagnosis after facing threats of financial ruin. Sheen, now 60, asserts that he never transmitted HIV to any of his former sexual partners, stating, “I know the fact that I’ve never told it.”

In his memoir, Sheen touches on his attempts to shield his chaotic lifestyle from public view. Yet, after experiencing severe headaches and other physical symptoms, he sought medical help. Reflecting on that time, he described how he was confronted with the potential consequences of serious health issues, saying, “They smacked my spine as soon as I arrived, and it was an experience that I didn’t own.”

Despite battling the stages of grief, Sheen mentioned feeling a newfound security after his diagnosis. “When they informed me that I had joined the unlucky rank of Highver – I didn’t say anything,” he recalled. He described the paradox of being relieved to engage with advanced medical treatments to combat the virus, even as he faced personal chaos.

Sheen shared a poignant moment of clarity while driving with his mother and a friend shortly after his diagnosis. He described a moment of joy when he saw his own reflection smiling in a car window, bringing a brief, bright sense of relief amidst the turmoil. “With a joint of burgers back to the cedars, we passed my favorite ’90s club at Rocks,” he reminisced.

His notorious party lifestyle included wild nights with stars like David Bowie and Madonna, but recently he’s revealed pursuing relationships with men as well. This shift was mentioned in an upcoming Netflix documentary, where he candidly discusses self-acceptance and personal growth.

Sheen’s personal history with addiction shaped his choices, and he ultimately quit alcohol cold turkey in 2017, realizing he needed to be present for his daughter’s doctor visits. He now shares custody of his twin sons with ex-wife Brooke Mueller, who experienced a tumultuous relationship marked by legal battles over financial support.

His memoir, The Book of Sheen, is slated for release on September 9, followed by the documentary “aka Charlie Sheen” on Netflix the next day.
