Charlie Sheen Opens Up About His Struggles in Upcoming Documentary
Charlie Sheen is getting candid about his battles with addiction after a long eight-year stretch of drinking. Recently, he acknowledged that he “lit up the Hughes,” hinting at how a wild lifestyle took its toll on him in the early 2000s. This personal revelation comes along with trailers for an upcoming Netflix documentary.
The two-part series, set to premiere on September 10th, explores Sheen’s rise and fall, detailing his struggles with substance abuse and a tumultuous history. In the trailer, he expressed, “When you carry shame about so many things… it’s really suffocating.” He reflected on the explosive misdirection of his life, stating, “I lit the fuse, and my life spiraled into everything it was never meant to be.”
The documentary features significant figures in Sheen’s life, including ex-wives Denise Richards and Brooke Mueller, creator Chuck Lorre, and co-star Jon Cryer. One of his daughters, appearing with Richards in the trailer, remarked, “You can’t really have a relationship with someone who is experiencing addiction.”
A former drug dealer also shares their perspective on Sheen’s past, noting, “When Charlie said he was smoking Sevengram rocks, he really was.” Notable actors like Sean Penn and Chris Tucker are part of the documentary as well. Penn commented, “Charlie’s real now. He’s going to tell you the truth.”
Sheen’s public struggles began around the late ’80s after his role in “Wall Street.” He recalled starting to drink heavily during filming in New York City, often staying out until the early hours. “I was with Michael Douglas for a scene, and then I’d have to handle my lines at 6 a.m.,” he shared, reflecting on those wild times.
Turning more personal, he spoke about his perceptions of addiction. “I told myself, ‘I’m not an addict; I don’t have a needle in my arm.’ Yet, I was just masking the reality. Drinking was really my real addiction,” he admitted. Sheen described grappling with feelings of insecurity about his success and celebrity status.
Throughout the next decade, despite multiple rehab attempts, Sheen faced serious consequences from his lifestyle, including a cocaine overdose in 1998. He went through a critical health scare, and his father, Martin Sheen, offered support, hoping his son would find a path to recovery.
Things took a darker turn as Sheen faced legal issues. In 2009, he was arrested after a Christmas incident where Mueller reported that he threatened her with a knife. Sheen eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced to rehab and probation, stemming from the incident.
The couple had twins, but their marriage crumbled, leading to their divorce in 2010. They lost custody of their children in 2013, with the boys living with more stable caregivers. Sheen reflected on his life as a single father, mentioning how he primarily raises his teenage sons now.
In 2011, Sheen was infamously fired from “Two and a Half Men,” a move attributed to his erratic behavior and frequent clashes with the show’s creator. While the show continued with a different lead, Sheen has since mended fences with Lorre, although not all former co-stars feel similarly. Jon Cryer expressed mixed feelings about collaboration, acknowledging Sheen’s talent while being cautious about a potential reunion.
In recent years, Sheen opted to quit drinking cold turkey, a decision spurred by a desire to be more present for his children. He noted that his initial month of sobriety brought noticeable improvements to his interactions and relationships, prompting him to continue the journey.
Reflecting on his transformation, Sheen concluded that he finally isn’t denying the positive impact of his decision to sober up. “There was immediate evidence that this was the path I needed to take,” he concluded.
