Weis to Stay with Ole Miss Through Playoffs

In a recent development, Ole Miss offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. will continue with the Rebels as they advance into the College Football Playoff. It seems like he’ll be with them for a while longer, which is good news for the team.

Weis, who joined Ole Miss in 2022, was among the staff members who flew to Baton Rouge shortly after Lane Kiffin made his commitment to LSU. Kiffin took a moment to acknowledge and congratulate Weis for remaining with the Rebels through this crucial postseason.

“I’m really thankful to LSU for allowing me to wrap up the season at Ole Miss,” Weiss mentioned in a statement. “I’ve felt a lot of support from Coach Kiffin and the LSU team, and we’re anticipating a strong playoff run.”

Interestingly, Weiss is one of several former Ole Miss coaches transitioning to LSU. He signed a lucrative three-year deal worth $6 million as the play-caller for the Tigers, making him one of the highest-paid assistants in college football.

Currently, Ole Miss stands at No. 7 with an 11-1 record, and they are almost guaranteed a spot in the College Football Playoff after a recent win against Mississippi State.

“As the playoff committee rolls out updated rankings, I wanted to make it clear that, after discussions with LSU, Charlie will be allowed to return to coach Ole Miss during the playoffs,” Kiffin stated. “We hope this helps them achieve a high ranking. The players truly deserve it. Charlie returning as coach for this remarkable team is exciting.”

While Weis is set to guide the Rebels, Kiffin’s situation is quite different. He expressed his desire to still coach the team in the playoffs but was ultimately not allowed to proceed after accepting the LSU position. “It was hard to leave Ole Miss,” Kiffin said at a press conference about his move. “We did everything possible to stay with the team, but it was ultimately their choice. I respect that.”

Weiss, by the way, has football in his blood; he’s the son of veteran coach Charlie Weiss Sr., who has worked alongside Kiffin at various institutions like Alabama and Florida Atlantic.

Following Kiffin’s departure, Pete Golding has been elevated to the position of permanent head coach for the Rebels.
