Charlie Woods probably has a bright future in golf, but his quest to qualify for his first PGA Tour tournament fell short Thursday.
Woods, the 15-year-old son of Tiger Woods, was looking to play in next week’s Cognizant Classic in front of his mother, Elin Nordegren, but finished 16 over in the pre-race at Lost Lake Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida. He scored 86. -Qualifying events.
His biggest struggle was the par-4 seventh hole, where he shot a 12.
The Cognizant Classic opens on February 29th at PGA National’s Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Charlie Woods, a high school freshman at Benjamin School, helped his team win the Florida High School Golf Championships held at the Howie in the Hills Club and Mission Inn Resort in November.
Tiger and Charlie Woods have competed in the PNC Championship as a father-son duo for the fourth year in a row, and Tiger’s daughter and Charlie’s younger sister, Samantha, caddied for this December’s tournament.
After the exhibition event, Tiger was optimistic about this year’s golf season.
“I think I’ll be able to walk and play,” Woods said of his recovery from ankle surgery in April, according to the Associated Press. “We’ve been training hard, so we’ve been able to recover. We’ve been training every day, which is great. Frankly, we haven’t taken any worthwhile shots in a long time. So it was nice to be able to dispel a lot of the rust and some of the doubts I had.
“It was really nice to have to score and take shots with the right numbers and take shots with consequences.”
Despite this, Woods was forced to miss last week’s Genesis Invitational after battling the flu in his first tournament of 2024.
