Charlize Theron Criticizes Timothée Chalamet’s Comments on Ballet and Opera
Charlize Theron has responded to Timothée Chalamet’s remarks about ballet and opera, calling them “reckless.” In a recent interview with the New York Times, the actress, known for her ballet background, emphasized the challenges of dancing, stating it’s “probably one of the hardest things to do.” She remarked, “Dancers are superheroes. They put their bodies on the line in complete silence,” and added, “Sorry, Timothée Chalamet.”
Theron expressed a hope to meet Chalamet someday, saying, “Oh, I hope I get to meet him someday.” She also defended ballet and opera, countering his views by saying, “This was a very reckless comment about one art form, two art forms, which we always have to bring up because, yes, they do have difficulties.” She argued that while advancements in AI might affect some jobs in the future, live human performances in these art forms cannot be replicated.
Reflecting on her own experiences, Theron explained how ballet has instilled discipline and resilience in her. “I’ve gotten blood infections several times from blisters that won’t heal. And there’s no time off,” she said with a sense of gravity. Mentioning the demands of dance, she added, “I’m literally talking about bleeding through your shoes, and that’s something you have to practice every day.” This level of commitment, she believes, is essential for success in the arts.
Chalamet, who recently sparked controversy with comments about ballet and opera, had stated in February, “I don’t want to work in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey! Nobody cares about this anymore, let’s keep this thing going.'” He noted that the fields have suffered financially, saying, “They just lost 14 cents in ratings. They’re taking pictures for no reason.” Chalamet’s remarks received backlash from various figures in the industry, including ballet legend Misty Copeland, who pointed out that art forms like ballet and opera have paved the way for many artists, including actors.
Steven Spielberg also weighed in during a panel discussion, underscoring the emotional connection audiences feel at the end of a great movie or performance, which, he noted, includes ballet and opera. Chalamet has not publicly responded to the backlash following his comments.
