Charlotte Transit Video Released After Stabbing Incident

Charlotte, North Carolina – The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has shared a disturbing video linked to a fatal stabbing that occurred on a light rail train two weeks ago.

The footage, which WJZY opted to edit due to its graphic nature, captures the events leading up to the stabbing.

In the video, the suspect, DeCarlos Brown, is seen sitting on the light rail as the victim, Iryna Zarutska, occupies a seat in front of him around 10 PM on August 22nd. For about four and a half minutes, Brown appears somewhat oblivious, not directing any attention toward Zarutska until suddenly pulling out a knife.

In a quick and violent act, he stabs Zarutska three times before calmly exiting the train, seemingly unconcerned as she collapses.

Brown is later spotted moving to a different area within the train and then fleeing with his hands concealed in a sweatshirt at the next station.

In light of this tragedy, city officials are pushing for enhanced security measures on public transit. Charlotte’s Mayor, Vilma Leake, commented on the incident, expressing her sadness and concern over safety in the city.

“This was a tragic loss. I am heartbroken and reflecting on what true safety means for our community. I am committed to ensuring Charlotte is safe for all,” she stated.

The incident has caused unease among riders. One passenger conveyed her shock, stating, “After hearing about it, I’ve really questioned whether I want to take the light rail anymore.” Meanwhile, opinions vary among riders regarding the presence of security following the stabbing.

While some, like Allison Lafolia, feel a lack of security personnel, Niharika Chandakur remarked on noticing an increased presence at certain busy times, especially during her morning commute.

Recently, WJZY reportedly took a trip on the light rail during the day, finding no security staff throughout the journey, which prompted concerns about rider safety.

Many agree that enhanced security measures are necessary, though there’s uncertainty about what those should involve. CATS mentioned that they have 35 executives currently working towards fully employing 219 security personnel through private firms.

City leaders have also emphasized fare enforcement as a crucial aspect of security, suggesting that those without tickets, like the suspect, could pose a greater risk.

Passengers have expressed hope that visible security can deter criminal behavior while providing transit safety, emphasizing that a secure environment encourages them to travel without fear.

As the discussion about transit safety continues, riders remain vigilant and hopeful for improvements in their daily commutes.
