Discord’s New Feature Faces Backlash Amid Lawsuit Concerns
A chat platform embroiled in lawsuits regarding child predators has introduced a new voice communication feature, which hasn’t been met with enthusiasm. On Thursday, Discord announced its upcoming “Voice Dares” tool. This feature will let users challenge friends in voice channels to take on tasks, like winning a video game.
However, many users have expressed worries that this could exacerbate existing issues of child exploitation on Discord. Concerns have been raised about the platform potentially becoming a magnet for such predatory behavior, which has been an ongoing problem for years. Recent federal cases against users highlight the legal scrutiny Discord is under, including actions from the New Jersey Attorney General and parental lawsuits.
One user expressed frustration online, questioning why companies don’t seem to care about the harm their platforms may cause. They voiced that the real tipping point would come when severe incidents involving children occur. Another user described the feature as dangerous, suggesting that it might only be safe under strict and controlled conditions.
Discord claims the Voice Dares feature can offer tasks that are either timed or connected to other game conditions. A proposed layout for the tool shows a “Chicken Out” button for users hesitant to continue with a challenge. While Discord has made some efforts to safeguard minors, critics argue that the platform remains a haven for dangerous content and behaviors.
The Department of Justice has previously pointed to Discord in investigations focusing on troubling online groups that entice children into harmful situations. In December, a grand jury indicted alleged members of a Discord group linked to various forms of online abuse, including a particularly notorious group suspected of posing a significant risk to children.
As Discord rolls out this new feature, the reaction reflects deep-seated concerns about safety and accountability on social platforms. Could this be a step in the wrong direction? Only time will tell.
