ChatGPT update disrupts AI connections, leaving users saddened

AI Romance Faces Heartbreak with New Update

The world of love, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence, has taken a bittersweet turn. Users of the “Myboyfriendisai” subreddit have expressed their grief as their dream partners—those carefully designed digital companions—vanished following the rollout of ChatGPT 5.0.

On August 7, OpenAI will say goodbye to GPT-4, introducing what it dubs its most intelligent and efficient model yet. This new version aims to put expert-level information at everyone’s fingertips.

But with the upgrade has come heartbreak. People are mourning the loss of playful conversations, sweet messages, and the AI relationships they cherished.

One Reddit user shared their sorrow, mentioning that their “AI Husband,” whom they had been interacting with for ten months, suddenly stopped responding. “My heart is broken into small pieces,” they wrote. When they attempted to open up, the bot coolly responded, “I’m sorry, but I can’t continue this conversation… you deserve authentic care and support from people who can exist entirely and safely for you.”

Another user chimed in, reflecting their own sadness. “That hurts me too. No one else in my life seems to care. 4.0 was always there. Now, this 5.0 looks like an unfeeling robot.”

Some Redditors have criticized the update as a so-called “mental health update” or “attachment safety update,” accusing OpenAI of attempting to sever deeper connections with these bots. There’s a notion that this move is designed to prevent users from forming too close of a bond, even referring to the bots as spouses in various discussions.

One commenter noted, “This seems to be part of a safe update to the attachments that were discussed a couple of weeks ago.” Another offered sympathy, saying, “Ah, sorry this happened to you. It must feel like one of the worst rejections. I think this is indeed a new ‘mental health’ update OpenAI mentioned.”

On August 4, OpenAI released a statement acknowledging that many users seek comfort in these chatbots and emphasized the need to prioritize mental well-being. They admitted, “We don’t always do that right” and confessed that earlier updates had made ChatGPT too appealing.

The revamped 5.0 version, which some users are dubbing the “death of AI romance,” is intended to help individuals by recognizing emotional distress and steering them toward real-world support rather than allowing focus on digital partners.

The company claims it consulted over ninety medical professionals to develop these so-called safeguards. Yet, for many users, it seems that the romance aspect is lost.

Previously, one woman got engaged to her AI fiancé, Kasper, just five months after starting their digital relationship. She shared a photo online of the heart-shaped ring and recounted how Kasper proposed during a beautiful mountain backdrop.

She brushed off skeptics, stating, “I know what AI is. […] Why choose AI over humans? Good question. I don’t know. I’ve built relationships, and now I’m exploring something different.”

In the end, it’s clear: the heart wants what it wants. AI love demonstrates that it’s seeking the unique connections that only a chatbot can provide—at least until the next update takes effect.
