Cheatle Admits ‘Most Significant Failure in Decades, But Still Won’t Resign

Speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle called the agency’s failure to protect former President Donald Trump “the greatest operational failure of the Secret Service in decades,” but did not indicate she plans to resign.

“The July 13 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump was the Secret Service’s most significant operational failure in decades,” Cheatle said at the first congressional hearing since the assassination attempt.

“The Secret Service’s solemn mission is to protect our nation’s leaders. On July 13th, we failed,” she added.

She said that as director of the Secret Service, she “takes full responsibility for any security failings at our agency.”

But she did not announce any steps to ensure accountability, simply saying she was “cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.”

“We need to know what happened and we will do everything in our power to ensure that an incident like July 13 never happens again,” she said.

She also suggested she had no plans to resign, despite multiple calls for her to do so last week.

In fact, she told lawmakers at her confirmation hearing on Monday, “I believe I am the best person to lead the Secret Service at this time.”

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-Ohio) both called for Cheatle’s resignation during the hearing.
