A dairy company based in New York has issued a recall for a specific lot of raw milk cheddar cheese that was distributed to several states, including New York, over concerns of E. coli contamination.
Family Farmstead Dairy announced the recall on Thursday for a batch of Raw Milk Cheddar Cheese, which has a best-by date of July 22, 2027. The affected cheese was distributed to retailers in New York and New Jersey, according to information shared by the US Food and Drug Administration.
The company noted that this cheese might be tainted with E. coli.
The recalled cheese also reached consumers in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, and Massachusetts; however, it could have been sent to other states via downstream distributors, as mentioned in the announcement.
Family Farmstead Dairy offers a range of products to grocery stores nationwide, including Whole Foods Market and Fresh Direct, according to their website.
Fortunately, no other products from Family Farmstead Dairy have been implicated in this recall.
The issue was discovered when a sample from Maryland revealed two strains of toxin-producing E. coli in the cheddar cheese. At the time of the announcement, there were no reported cases of illness or allergic reactions linked to the recalled cheese.
In their recall announcement, Family Farmstead Dairy expressed sincere apologies to their customers, retail partners, and consumers for any trouble caused by the recall.
They emphasized that product quality is a top priority and that they are committed to resolving the issue and implementing any necessary corrective measures to maintain the safety and quality of their products.
E. coli can lead to diarrhea, often with bloody stools, but most healthy adults typically recover within about a week.
However, there are cases where individuals may develop a serious condition known as Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which can result in severe kidney damage or even death.
This syndrome is most likely to affect young children and elderly individuals.
