Tobias D’Orzon Reflects on Surviving a Violent Attack
Food Network personality Tobias D’Orzon opened up about the harrowing night when he was shot 11 times during an armed robbery. In an interview, he shared his experience from November 5, 2024, when he was ambushed by armed robbers and how he managed to survive the attack.
“I was trying to protect my girlfriend, Crystal Swan, when it started,” D’Orzon recounted. Having just returned home to Maryland after a night out, he described panicking as gunfire erupted. “I hit the ground and tried to crawl to safety, but I knew I wasn’t alone,” he added, referring to the chaos around him.
He remembered stepping out of their Uber and quickly noticing a group armed with guns approaching. Strangely, on that fateful evening, he hadn’t brought a security team with him.
In the midst of the violence, thoughts raced through his mind. “I kept wondering, am I going to make it? These guys are shooting at me—what’s next? Are they going to finish the job? It felt surreal,” he said, worried about the safety of those around him.
Sadly, D’Orzon’s girlfriend was also injured and found in their front yard. He bravely placed his phone on the curb where he had fallen and managed to FaceTime his brother before help arrived.
Indictment documents reveal that the stolen items, which included D’Orzon’s luxury watch and jewelry, were collectively worth around $100,000. The thieves fled in a stolen vehicle, and later, authorities identified a suspect—21-year-old Devin Demetrius Spivey.
Spivey, who claims he is innocent, faces multiple charges, including attempted murder and armed robbery. His attorney, Brendan Callahan, remarked that the investigation is ongoing and that many questions remain unanswered, suggesting further inquiries might clear Spivey’s name.
D’Orzon’s injuries were severe; he faced significant damage that left him uncertain about ever walking again. “Honestly, it was tough to process,” he said. “I never thought I would find myself in such a terrifying position, especially when I had just started making a name for myself.”
He frequently reflects on that night. “I often wonder if going out was a mistake,” he admitted. “But, you know, I think there’s a reason I’m still here.” He believes there’s a larger purpose waiting for him.
Following his ordeal, D’Orzon spent two months recovering in hospitals, undergoing several surgeries and intense physical therapy. During this time, he received unwavering support from Guy Fieri, who frequently checked in and offered encouragement.
D’Orzon is now making his return to television with the premiere of “Tournament of Champions: An All-Star Christmas.” Adjusting to post-recovery life has its challenges, particularly as he deals with limited feeling in one of his fingers, complicating his work in the kitchen. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic.
“I’m just thankful to still be here, with the ability to create and share memorable food experiences with people,” he said. “That has always been my passion and my dream.”
