Jerry Nadler’s Upcoming Departure Opens Doors for New Politicians
New York Representative Jerry Nadler has declared he will not seek reelection in 2026, which could pave the way for several notable Democratic families to enter the political arena.
Among those speculated to be considering a run for the open congressional seat are Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, and Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. This was reported by the Daily Beast.
However, a spokesperson for Chelsea Clinton has denied claims that she is planning to run for Nadler’s soon-to-be vacant position. Rachel Schilke, a reporter for the Washington Examiner, noted the spokesperson’s assertion that “there’s no truth to this” following recent reports suggesting otherwise.
This situation casts doubt on the possibility of the Clintons stepping away from a significant opportunity that Ken Sunshine, a longtime friend of Nadler, referred to as “a crown jewel” of New York politics.
Hillary Clinton once claimed she wouldn’t pursue the presidency again but later reconsidered. After her loss to Barack Obama in the Democratic primary, she publicly stated multiple times that her name wouldn’t be on the Democratic ticket for the upcoming elections. Yet, in 2015, she did run again, successfully securing the Democratic nomination but ultimately losing to Donald Trump in the 2016 election.
It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will refrain from running and instead seek influence through other channels, much like Alexander Soros, son of major Democratic donor George Soros. Perhaps she’s learned from her mother’s political misadventures and prefers operating behind the scenes via the Clinton Foundation.
On the flip side, this could also be a strategic pause for Chelsea, gathering support and funding among her Upper West Side constituents until her candidacy feels like a foregone conclusion. Regardless of her intentions, this seat hasn’t been vacant for many years, and it’s likely that Democrats will aim for a candidate who aligns closely with party ideals.
