Preamble
It’s refreshing to cover a Premier League match with so much on the line. Liverpool may have clinched the league title last weekend, but for Chelsea, the stakes are still high as they vie for a Champions League spot alongside Manchester City, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, and Aston Villa.
Three teams are currently tied at 60 points, with Chelsea holding the coveted final Champions League position based on goal difference. It’s a tense moment for the Blues, desperate to return to the elite European competition after a couple of years lingering in the Conference League.
Perhaps there were some groggy heads at the start of the week, but I wouldn’t count on Liverpool slowing down. Though their league challenges are done, many players will be anxiously watching their performances—especially with the summer transfer window looming. The pressure is particularly on those players on the fringes of the squad, and we might see a few of them start today.
Interestingly, Liverpool hasn’t spent much in the transfer market recently and the manager has indicated a desire for new signings. This makes today’s game all the more intriguing, even if it strays from normal expectations.
Kick-off: 4:30 PM BST.
