Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) slammed former President Trump for reposting a meme that suggested Cheney had committed “treason.”
“Donald, this is the kind of thing that once again shows you are not a stable adult and unfit for public office,” she wrote. Social media platform X.
Cheney was responding to a post by MeidasTouch. Screenshot shared Trump reposted the meme on his social media platform, Truth Social, suggesting that Cheney will be tried in a televised military tribunal, though it is unclear on what charges.
The memes read, “Elizabeth Lynne Cheney is guilty of treason” and “If you want to televise a military tribunal, tell the truth.” Trump said, “Tell the truth.” MemesIt was posted on Sunday.
President Trump had previously called for Cheney to be indicted over allegations that she and other members of the Jan. 6 Select Committee deliberately concealed testimony and details in their investigation into the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Cheney has pushed back against those demands, saying she knows “these are lies.”
Cheney served as vice chair of the House Jan. 6 Committee and emerged as one of the former president’s most vocal Republican critics. She is no longer on the committee and is losing her seat in 2022.
House Republicans have tried in recent months to discredit the Jan. 6 commission’s initial findings. President Trump last month called for the indictment of members of the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6 attacks after a federal judge ordered his longtime ally Steve Bannon to go to prison.
“The Un-American weaponization of our law enforcement has reached a level of illegality never before thought possible,” Trump posted last month. “Indict the unscreened J6 committee for illegally deleting and destroying all of their ‘findings’!”
Bannon was charged with contempt of Congress for failing to comply with a subpoena from a House committee investigating the riot and was sentenced to 10 years in prison in Connecticut on Monday.
