Cheney hits back at Trump: 'You can't change the truth'

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) applauded President-elect Trump after criticizing President Biden for awarding the Presidential Citizens Medal to her and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi) this week. .

“Donald, this is not the Soviet Union,” Cheney wrote on social media platform X Friday. “You can't change the truth and you can't silence us.”

Cheney was recognized Thursday for her work as vice chair of the House Select Committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, and for her seven years of service in Congress. Thompson, who chaired the committee on Jan. 6, was also praised by Biden for his “lifelong dedication to defending the Constitution.”

Earlier Friday, President Trump criticized the move on Truth Social, claiming that Biden had awarded the two men “fake medals” and labeling Cheney “corrupt.”

“Biden rewarded her only because she hated 'Trump,'” he wrote of the former congressman.

Cheney, an outspoken critic of President Trump, has long found herself at the center of the former president's ire. She responded to President Trump's social media post late Friday, slamming the former president's past claims about 2020 election fraud.

“Remember all the lies about voting machines and election officials, and the countless lies about fraud allegations that never actually existed?” she wrote. “Many of your lawyers have been sanctioned, disciplined, or disbarred, courts have ruled against you, and dozens of your own White House, administration, and campaign aides have testified against you. I did.”

Rudy Giuliani, a staunch ally of President Trump, was disbarred in Washington this fall for his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, D.C. lawyers found that Jeffrey Clark violated ethics rules in supporting President Trump's efforts to block the transfer of power, recommended that his law license be suspended for two years, and recommended that Jeffrey Clark's law license be suspended for two years. One Trump ally, Sidney Powell, also imposed sanctions on her. After trying to overturn the results in Michigan.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter went on to highlight former Vice President Mike Pence's refusal to certify the 2020 election results at President Trump's request.

“Remember how we stopped the former vice president from overthrowing our republic?” Cheney said.

“We remember,” she continued. “And now that you are president again, the American people must reject your latest malicious falsehood and stand as the guardrails of our constitutional republic to protect the America we love from you.”
