Cher Makes a Mistake by Declaring the Late Luther Vandross as a Grammy Winner

Cher’s Grammy Blunder: A Surprising Mishap

At the Grammy Awards on Sunday, Cher accidentally named the late Luther Vandross as the winner of Record of the Year, which became one of the biggest gaffes of the event.

After receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, Cher found herself in an awkward moment. She was brought back to the stage by host Trevor Noah to announce the next nominee. Instead of recognizing Kendrick Lamar and SZA for their song, she confidently declared that Vandross, who passed away in 2005, had won.

“Oh, the Grammy goes to Luther Vandross!” she exclaimed, clearly thrilled. The audience, however, looked bewildered, and cameras quickly shifted focus to Lamar, who sat at his table, trying to process the strange error before realizing he was the actual winner.

When he finally made his way to the stage with his team, Cher remained there with a fixed smile, seemingly oblivious to the mix-up. “No! Kendrick Lamar!” she shouted over the applause. She seemed to wait for the award to be presented, creating an oddly tense atmosphere.

Lamar’s collaborator, Mustard, took the mic upon reaching the stage, asking for a moment of silence in honor of Vandross, the song’s inspiration—giving Cher a brief respite from the awkwardness she had inadvertently created.

Social media quickly buzzed with reactions as viewers noticed Cher’s frozen stance, not immediately leaving as Lamar and his team began their acceptance speeches.

Despite the blunder, Cher appeared to handle the situation well, though Trevor Noah made sure to lighten the mood by quipping about the unpredictable nature of live television, and highlighting the ridiculousness of it all.
